Just shared this with a friend in your area! How awesome of you guys to offer <3
you guys are the very best.
This is positively disgusting! It is anti-God! It is Anti-Bible! Marriage is only between a man and a woman!!
Rory, let me tell you what is disgusting.
Hatred and bigotry born out of unquestioning religious fundamentalism and a complete lack of consideration for one’s fellow humans is disgusting and the product of an insecure, intellectually lazy mind.
I find it pitiful and such a waste when the potential of the human mind and spirit is squandered by narrow-minded, narcissistic religious fundamentalists like yourself. You could be someone who works to make this world a more harmonious and fulfilling place for everyone.
Instead of engaging in dialogue with and understanding your fellow humans, you think your opinion is superior to billions of other people’s perspectives on life because you have some direct channel to God’s mind not available to the rest of us?
Even if you’re not openminded enough to reexamine your personal beliefs, you need to realize you live in the United States, not Uganda. Our constitution guarantees equal rights and protections to all citizens. You can’t deprive a citizen of the same rights you enjoy because of your religious opinions. That is the exact opposite of the morals our country’s founders stood for.
Unless you’re willing to open your mind, shut up and crawl back down into your deep, dark hole and let everyone else live in the sun.
Amen Mike! Well said.
Oh this makes me so sad ๐ On one hand I agree with Roryโs statement above, albeit without the intensity of the exclamation marks. So on the other hand, I can see why that may be interpreted as hateful and bigoted. I often think Christians can be misunderstood on this topic as being hateful (although there are some who may be filled with hate on this issue, I am sure, and I can’t speak for Rory one way or another), however itโs simply a matter of listening to the voice of authority in our lives, which is God. He is the one a person who follows Jesus listens to, not the country or the culture, because Godโs words in the Bible outline what it means to live according to the way He knows is best, and His words have transcended millennia of ebbs and flows of countries and cultures. To agree with those who believe this lifestyle is equivalent to truth and love, and therefore they believe that should be the end of the discussion, is (for Christians) going against our voice of authority. You know how as a kid you listened to your parents because you knew they were looking out for you and wanted the best for you? This is what it means to be a Christian and to follow Jesus and His words-we follow Him. Iโm sorry that it comes across as intentional hate โ like I said the comments above made me so sad. As much as I wanted to refrain from writing this comment because I know how sensitive of a topic this is, I feel it had to be said. Thank you for reading.
Britt,
Like it or not, civil law (constitution in the US) does trump your religious practices when they infringe upon another’s equal right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. Live and let live – that’s the agreement we keep in order to have a civil society.
You’re constitutionally obligated to let other citizens live under equal legal terms. You can support a legal framework for gay marriage while keeping your moral reservations if you choose – their happiness and equal rights in no way hinders your life.
No one’s imposed Sharia on you lately, have they? Has anyone banned pork in your supermarket or dogs from being pets? Made you wear a burqa?
Have you tried to pass any laws prohibiting others from working on your Sabbath? From taking your God’s name in vain? From eating a steak on Friday? Have you declined to legally recognize a Hindu or Buddhist marriage because you don’t believe in Vishnu or Budddha?
I imagine you answered “no” to all of the questions. So why oppose letting gay couples marry legally – we’re not asking you to allow it in your church? Why make a stand here?
So well said Mike. There’s a dialogue to be had for sure for those who will open their minds and engage in one, but I am embarrassed and ashamed to be aligned with Christians who spew hate and bigotry. This isn’t just a religious or moral issue, it’s a civil rights issue akin to racismโฆ I am ashamed we have to have this conversation, and our children and grandchildren will be absolutely appalled. Ugh. I’m so sick of apologizing for my ‘fellow Christians’. I refuse to align myself with those who would exclude and ostracize anyone. My church is open and affirming, our pastoral intern is gay, a large portion of our members are gay, the LGBTQ community are married in our church if they want a religious ceremony, we march in the pride parade. EVERYONE is not only allowed – we are all embraced. We aren’t all bad! I’m so sorry for posts like the previous one. I can’t wait to see your photos and am so proud to be one of your alumni!!
Kudos to you Bobbi + Mike for having the boldness to speak up on this issue! Mike, I appreciate your well-informed and intelligent reply here. Just like the abhorrent religiously disguised racism of the past two centuries in America, this too will fade. Our government is a Constitutionally-based representative democracy and thankfully not a theocracy. There shouldn’t be any government interference between the love of consenting adults in our country. I applaud your stance!
